Producing Christian media programs in the midst of unrest

In the midst of unrest in North Lebanon and sporadic bomb explosions in and around the city of Beirut, the Bible Society, in partnership with Tele-Lumiere, a local Catholic television station, celebrated the opening of an audio-visual studio located on the underground floor of the Bible Society center on May 30, 2007. It was the week of Pentecost and almost a year after the two organizations collaborated to equip the studio facilities. The president of the Episcopal Commission for Catholic Media, Bishop Roland Abou Jaoude, and the leadership of both organizations opened the studio during a live broadcast on Tele-Lumiere.

The studio facilities are now being used by SAT-7, a Christian satellite television, to produce children’s programs for broadcast. ‘Sanabel Net’ is a children’s program, hosted by a young lady, addressing the positive side and benefits of the internet from a Christian perspective.

“We are thrilled that our Bible Society center is being used to its utmost capacity,” said Mike Bassous, General Secretary of the Bible Society in Lebanon. “We now have two prominent Christian television stations partnering with the Bible Society in order to produce Arabic programs to be broadcast throughout the Middle East.” The children’s program will be broadcast on SAT-7 Kids, a specialized children’s slot on the satellite station. “This is happening at a time when most of the world is anxious about Lebanon’s future,” continued Mr. Bassous, “but we are confident that our message of hope is not easily suppressed.”
